What Is a Box Guideway System?

Also known as hydrostatic friction or box guideway systems, the main operating principle of this guideway system is based on surface contact between the guideway and sliding components. In this system, there is a clearance of approximately 5 microns (0.005 mm) between the guideway and the sliding surfaces, and an oil film is maintained within this gap to ensure smooth movement.

Advantages of Box Guideways:

  • High rigidity
  • Low vibration
  • Better shock absorption
  • Powerful and deep cutting capability
  • Suitable for all types of materials

Disadvantages of Box Guideways:

  • Slow rapid traverse speed
  • High manufacturing cost
  • Lower precision
  • High maintenance cost
  • Excessive oil consumption

When Should a Box Guideway System Be Preferred?

In CNC machine tools, box guideways are generally preferred when:

  • The material to be machined is hard
  • The workpiece to be mounted is heavy (typically in machining centers)
  • Impact and interrupted cutting operations are required
  • Deep cutting depths and high material removal rates are needed
  • Regular maintenance and related costs are acceptable

What Is a Linear Guideway System?

In guideway systems referred to as linear guideways, the traditional sliding surfaces are replaced by a carriage and rail structure. These two components move through the rolling action of intermediary elements called balls or rollers. Similar to box guideways, lubrication is also present on the contact surfaces. However, since the movement is based on rolling rather than sliding friction, a much smaller amount of lubrication is sufficient.

Ball-Type Linear Motion System

Advantages of Linear Guideway Systems:

  • High-speed movements
  • Much higher dimensional accuracy
  • Long service life
  • Low manufacturing cost
  • Low maintenance and repair costs

Roller-Type Linear Motion System

Disadvantages of Linear Guideway Systems:

  • Relatively lighter cutting operations
  • Higher possibility of vibration
  • Lower rigidity
  • Not suitable for processing all material types
  • Can be easily damaged in case of crashes or impacts

Additional Information:
The disadvantages mentioned for linear guideway systems are relatively less common in roller-type linear guideways compared to ball-type linear guideways.

When Should a Linear Guideway System Be Preferred?

In CNC machine tools, linear guideways should generally be preferred when:

  • Speed is important in the overall machining time
  • Tight tolerances and high dimensional accuracy are required
  • Relatively smoother-shaped workpieces are to be machined
  • Deep cutting operations are not required
  • Regular maintenance and related costs are acceptable

Based on the information above, it is not correct to say that either linear motion systems or box guideway (sliding guideway) systems are absolutely superior to one another. The key factor here is selecting the most suitable motion system for the intended application.

Due to the high production and maintenance & repair costs, manufacturers of CNC machine tools have gradually reduced the use of box guideway systems in production. Instead, unless it is strictly necessary, they tend to prefer linear guideway systems.
